I must follow from what Carlos spoke of and say that the "3rd Step" shall proceed while contributors like this marvellous website and other thinkers uphold what Ronnie achieved ensuring that his work continues through the will and determination of his friends and followers throughout the world. I am now a practicing psychotherapist. RD Laing was probably the greatest influence on me because I read him first. I was interested in psychology since I was 12 and began taking psychology classes in high school and summer school between academic years. I read The Divided Self in 11th grade and practically cracked my head on it I was so unprepared for all of his references. But I did get the essence of his ideas about a split in the self. This book and many others of his have provided a foundation for my thinking ever since. To this day as I practice in a more orthodox psychodynamic style my thinking is shaped by Laing.

A second thought: it should come as no surprise that not a single journal here in South Africa has mentioned Ronnie's death, any of his anniversaries, or even his work. His seminal contribution to our understanding of families, for example, is simply ignored in this country. But even if I represent a minority of one, happy birthday Ronnie.

After reading Laing's work and numerous works about him for almost 30 years, I still find him, fascinating, infuriating, complex, brilliantly gifted, and one of the great intellectual companions of my life. Genius exacts a high price, as the myth of Icarus informs us.
